Coffee isn’t just black water. Many of the nutrients in the coffee beans do make it into the final drink, which contains a significant amount of vitamins and minerals.

A cup of coffee contains:
6% of the RDA for Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5)
11% of the RDA for Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)
2% of the RDA for Niacin (B3) and Thiamine (B1)
3% of the RDA for Potassium and Manganese.

Bottom Line: Coffee contains a decent amount of several vitamins and minerals. It is also the biggest source of antioxidants found in the modern diet.

2. Coffee can make you feel happier

A study done by the National Institute of Health found that those who drink four or more cups of coffee per day were about 10 percent less likely to be depressed than those who had never touched coffee.

And apparently it’s not because of the “caffeine high” – fizzy cola drinks can also give you caffeine high, but they’re linked to depression. The reason coffee makes you feel good is because of those trusty antioxidants.

Coffee doesn’t just keep you awake; it may literally make you smarter as well. The active ingredient in coffee is caffeine, which is a stimulant and the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance in the world. Coffee allows your brain to work in a much more efficient and smarter way.

4. Coffee could reduce your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes

Coffee also lowers risk of Type 2 diabetes, according to a study from The American Chemical Society. The study’s researchers found that people who drink four or more cups of coffee a day reduce their chances of developing Type 2 diabetes by 50 percent. Subsequently, with every additional cup, the risk gets lowered by 7 percent.

Not only can coffee make you smarter in the short term, it may also impact how your brain ages. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common neurodegenerative disorder in the world and a leading cause of dementia.

In prospective studies, coffee drinkers have up to a 60% lower risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia Parkinson’s is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, characterised by death of dopamine-generating neurons in the brain. Coffee may lower the risk of Parkinson’s by 32-60%

Darren Gardiner, Co-founder of Ground Espresso Bars said: “To make sure to preserve the health benefits, don’t put sugar or anything nasty in your coffee.

“At the end of the day, it does seem quite clear that coffee is NOT the villain it was made out to be. If anything, coffee may literally be the healthiest beverage on the planet”.
